about

Musica Style: Jazz, Neo-Soul

Musical Influences: Jill Scott, Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves

Musical Inspiration: This song is a culmination of all my training and experience in jazz, soul, and r&b. And I finally get to get back to singing how I love to sing. Don't get me wrong, I love belting it out for the people, but I have a more refined side, too, and I'm happy to be able to showcase that.

Track Description: “Try” by Kim Dawson is an anthem for those striving to reach their full potential. Teaming up with keyboardist extraordinaire, Wil Blades, Dawson uses lush chords and grooves that showcase a refined background performing jazz, neo-soul, and R&B while never being confined to one realm or another. Dawson’s letter to herself speaks to those of all walks of life who need a little encouragement to overcome the fear of putting themselves out there. As a staple in Matador! Soul Sounds and featured artist in all-star groups across the country, this new direction is a well-rounded sound signature sound of Dawson as a solo artist and “Try” is the perfect testament to put her on the map.

Artist Quote: "Try" is an anthem for those striving to reach their potential. I am very fortunate to have my friend, Wil Blades, on this track. Wil was an important piece of the puzzle, and he plays beautifully on it. The track is rounded out with musicians Paul McDaniel, Brant Williams, Braxton Kahn, Adriene Bible and LaDamion Massey who really help bring this song to life. This is the Kim Dawson sound, and I'm so excited for everyone to hear it.

lyrics

Admit it, it's time
You've let the fear take the wheel
Going down the road of lame excuses
It's such a crime that you've forgotten how to fight
You've faked an injury when they're just bruises

How does it feel to hate your own reflection
How does it feel to wallow every day
How does it feel to walk with no direction
How long you gonna take until you

Try
Ignore the questions in your mind
Don't let another moment pass you by
You'll never know if you don't try
So just try

It's easy to say
The time isn't right to take a leap
There's so much to do in preparation
Your lack of faith, that's what's holding you back
It keeps you in the desert of frustration

How does it feel to hate your own reflection
How does it feel to wallow every day
How does it feel to walk with no direction
How long you gonna take until you

Try
Ignore the questions in your mind
Don't let another moment pass you by
You'll never know if you don't try
So just try

I know you're scared, having nightmares, of leaving others in despair
You think they care, so you don't dare, you think you'll only be compared
But darling what you hold within can bring you joy you've never known
So start the show, come on, let's go, the world is waiting

Try
Ignore the questions in your mind
Don't let another moment pass you by
You'll never know if you don't try
Won't you try
And then try
Please just try
Try
And then try
Won't you try
Just try
